Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers remercient la Kadist Art Foundation pour son soutien amical. The Israelites walked in the water towards the Holy Land. The Palestinians walked in the water to drown. Shot / reverse shot Jewish people joined the Fiction. The Palestinians, the documentary. (Jean-Luc Godard, Notre Musique) During his short residency at Laboratoire d’Aubervilliers, Zaatari attempts to write, improvise, and deliver a conversation with an imagined Israeli filmmaker, giving him the name of Avi Mograbi. In this long conversation Zaatari compiles recordings from his childhood, growing up during the Israeli occupation of his city Saida (1982-1985), and imagines what an Israeli filmmaker could have compiled during those years. The conversation sheds light on the Israel/Lebanon war, and the complexity of the recent history, including drafting borders, mobility of individuals, and the concept of an enemy. But most importantly the conversation questions what does it mean to be a documentary filmmaker today, in an area that have gone through occupation, and where public opinion shifts dramatically from side to side. The outcome of this conversation will be transcribed and published once in English and French, and once in Arabic and Hebrew. |
