The work of John Menick explores different subjects related to the standardization of time and the scientific approach of the organization of work. His latest piece, The Disappearance, is a video composed of several layers of fiction and deals with the transformation of the urban condition through the cinema. This work, presented at the Laboratoires in 2003, occasioned inviting the artist to create a piece produced by the Laboratoires in 2005. John Menick is preparing a film about the town of Aubervilliers, which will be a fictitious and futuristic documentary, entitled Aubervilliers (2089). Echoing the film Aubervilliers (1946) by Eli Lothar and Jacques Prévert, Aubervilliers (2089) examines the town as if it were studied by a team specialized in documentaries in 2089. The film, which presents futuristic themes as real, uses the speculative possibilities of science fiction in order to discuss of the present political, social, urban and cultural situation of the town. The basic material will come from specialists of various fields – urban development, sociology, technology, etc. Starting from these multiple entries, the project will concentrate on a reduced series of themes, specific to Aubervilliers (urban environment, left-wing politics, immigration policies…).
