Following an invitation from the Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, Antonia Baehr intends, through her project Merci, to extend her research into control and its representation and perception, a theme already explored by the choreographer in previous projects. Merciis developed around two working times. The first stage is constructed around a duo with the dancer Valérie Castan : two people develop the material through a permutation of the roles of director and actor, and interact via an obvious set of rules. From this founding exercise which took place at the Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers in the spring of 2006, two distinct projects became crystallized, one in the name of Valérie Castan, the other in the name of Antonia Baehr. These two projects subsequently divided, Valérie Castan’s following its own course and thus breaking out of the framework of the proposition. Antonia Baehr’s project was connected to the interpretation of a score developed in a duo in Aubervilliers in the autumn of 2006. The structure at the base of the work of the first stage now becomes the content of the project : the two artists command and execute each other’s projections, they direct and are directed. Beyond a fundamental questioning of games of power and submission, it is equally one of the basic ingredients of the western theatre tradition that is under scrutiny here : the question of imitation, of mimesis illuminated from a (post)-identity or queer point of view, bypassing the binary opposition between acting (role, character, costume, the actor’s psychological approach, etc.) and non-acting (the accomplishment of tasks and daily movements in everyday dress). An opportunity to measure how lived experience, autobiographical elements or a certain type of activism may inform theatre practice and theory, and vice-versa. Conception / Direction : Antonia Baehr.
