The title of this project is derived from Georges Perec's Tentative d'Epuisement d'Un Lieu Parisien (Attempt at Exhausting a Parisian Place) in which the author endeavors to describe what is happening at Place Saint Sulpice in Paris "when nothing is happening except time, people, cars and clouds." The term "exhaustion" has been substituted with "saving," because the authors are more interested in building a sense memory of a place, than in describing it exhaustively. The second distortion of Perec's title concerns the place itself - the "Parisian" place becomes a "peripheral" one.

Tentative de sauvegarde d'un lieu peripherique is rooted in the city of Aubervilliers, whose growth is typical of the rapid change that is affecting all of Paris' northern and eastern suburbs. The main intersection of Quatres Chemins, because of its heavy car, pedestrian, and commercial traffic, is both a good vantage point from which to observe this transformation and a place whose current vitality deserves to be remembered.

So, for the past year, Brahim Ahmadouche and Patrick Bernier have undertaken to regularly observe the intersection, to organize their observations according to a predefined order, and to find an original way of showing the immaterial work they've begun during their residency at the Laboratoires.

They've tried out different techniques for that purpose. These include: collecting accounts from residents, shop owners, or passersby; keeping track of new additions to the urban landscape - like signs; and recording street noise. These elements are then combined to "progressively constitute the living memory of the neighborhood in transformation."

The first showings will take place in the context of guided tours of Petit Prusse, Histoire And Memoires des 4 Chemins, a project initiated by the city of Aubervilliers, between December and June 2009.
